How to design a website

  • Decide on the type of website you want to create

The first thing to do before going ahead to design a website is to research and find out the type of website you want to create. Is it for personal use as journals like blogs, or for business or maybe a forum where people can converge and have discussions online.

  • Get a Domain Name

Once you have thought about the type of website you want to build, the next thing is to get a domain name. A domain name is the name you want your website to bear. For example, if it is a personal website and you are a fitness person then you might use john-fitness, which would be www.John fitness.com. For you to get your domain name , you have to pay an annual fee to an online domain registrar. Like normal registration of business names, getting a domain name does not mean that you have the website already. Its just the right to use the name.

  • Choose and Sign Up for a Web Host Account

A web host company is a company with a lot of computers connected to the internet. When you pay and sign up on a web host, they give you a space to upload your webpages on their computers so that people all over the world can view them online. Just like getting a domain name is synonymous to registering a business name, then getting a web hosting account is similar to renting an office for your business which you registered its name.

  • Design Your Web-pages

The next step once you are done registering your domain name and signing up for a web host account is to actually design the webpages. This is similar to actually painting the office and making it look good and fit for the purpose you are creating it for. At this stage you would require some tools called Web Editors, since you would be doing this yourself it is best you use WYSIWYG (‘What You See Is What You Get’) web editors as they take away the technical part and provide visuals as you use them, they allow you see the immediate effect of the changes you make. They are similar to word processors. These web editors come in both free and paid variations. Some of the best free ones include  Microsoft Expression Web, BlueGriffon etc. While the paid ones include Dreamweaver.

  • Test your Website

Although during the design stage you ought to test run your website as you design and make changes. You need to test run your webpages and its design on major web browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 11, Firefox and Microsoft Edge. This stage is important as it is the only way you get to find out if your site works the way you want it to.

These are some tips on how to design a website by yourself. Of course, there are professionals that can do this for you but it is also good to try your hand at it.
